6hr Hobbiton Movie Set Tour - Departs Tauranga Cruise Port
Overview
Take a whole day to soak up everything Hobbiton has to offer, without the rush. You'll get a sneak peek into the making of the movie set, and see one of the few film sets that's been preserved long after the cameras stopped rolling. Whether you're a diehard Lord of the Rings fan or just looking for a unique day trip, this tour is a winner.
What To Expect
Mount Maunganui
We kick off the tour with a scenic drive along the beach at Mount Maunganui, then we cross the Tauranga Harbour bridge, zip past the city center, and head inland over the Kaimai ranges. We'll climb to about 1800 feet, giving you breathtaking panoramic views of the lush farmland of the Waikato province. From there, we head towards Hobbiton, passing typical New Zealand farms along the way.
Hobbiton Movie Set
Once we reach the Shires Rest Cafe, the Hobbiton bus picks us up and whisks us off to Middle Earth via the 1250-acre sheep farm. Your knowledgeable guide will lead you on a 2-hour adventure through "The Shire". You'll hear the tale of how this remote set was found and how a team of gardeners and maintenance staff keep Hobbiton a living film set. It's the only purpose-built film set in the world that's open to the public to experience just as it appears in the movie.
McLaren Falls Park
After a lunch break (if time allows) and some shopping at the Shires Rest Cafe, we head back over the Kaimai range, stopping at the lookout for a photo op of the beautiful Waikato farmland. Then it's on to our last stop at McLaren Falls. McLaren Falls is a 190 hectare park with pastoral and horticultural land nestled next to Lake McLaren. A ten minute walk through native New Zealand bush-land takes you to a picturesque waterfall. Finally, we head back to the city, cross the harbour bridge, and drop you off to your cruise ship.
